Pneuma
Performed by Jan Arlt & Andreas O. Hirsch
On 3 September 2015 at Port de Vinaigre, the artists will perform Erik Satie’s Vexations, with the help of the construction pictured. Appropriate clothing is requested.
Pneuma comes from Greek, roughly meaning ‘breath‘, ‘air‘ or ‘spirit‘. The construction, set up specifically for this performance, consists of a rubber boat whose air chambers are connected by tubing with two melodicas, which are then driven by the escaping air. By playing the keys the performers thus bring about their own sinking.
Erik Satie’s Vexations (French for ‘humiliations’) comes to performers with the composer’s directive to prepare in utmost silence and complete motionlessness, in order to repeat the relatively short motif 840 times. Unpublished in Satie’s lifetime, the piece was first performed in its entirety in 1963 upon the initiative of John Cage.
When: Thursday, 3 September at 6:30pm
Where: Port de Vinaigre in Deutzer Hafen, right bank of the Rhine between the Aurora-Mühle and the Essigfabrik. Entrance from Siegburger Str. 110., 50679 Köln.
Public transport: Take tram No 7 from Köln Center towards Porz, stop at Poller Kirchweg, walk back 100m, turn left behind Essigfabrik and walk through to the dock.

Summe 1
12 inch vinyl out on makiphon – two of the tracks here on Soundcloud
After numerous concerts and performances throughout the last years, Summe 1 is Hirsch’s first release on makiphon. The album concentrates on peculiar soundscapes and drony pieces, carefully interwoven by means of pitched harmonicas, electric guitars, mini fans, delays and the electric palm leaf, an electroacoustic invention of the artist. The eight titles evoke a space somewhere between interstellar geography (Maxwell Mountains – a plateau on planet Venus), abstract physics (Teilchenbeschleuniger), botanical scenery and animality: Kemeri 5 am features nocturnal crane calls that Hirsch recorded on a bike trip in a swamp near Riga while he was busy with decoding bird messages via morse code. Opossum Pravda is dedicated to the tenacious marsupial that likes to wander around at night and which is able to hang from trees by its tail. Kautschukwaage seems to suggest an exotic setting and provides a link to the rubber bands which one hears resonating in the miniature.
300 copies. Mastered by Joseph Suchy.
Summe 1 is available through a-musik and makiphon

Solar Sound Ensemble, DVD & Booklet
On December 14th 2012 we released our DVD Solar Sound Ensemble at the CBK Drenthe in Assen, NL. Solar Sound Ensemble presented a site-specific audiovisual performance on location of the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope in the province of Drenthe/ NL in July 2011. Crucial elements of the performance are the sonification of data recorded with the telescope as well as a video projection onto the grid of the telescope dish. The publication contains a full video documentation of the performance along with information about its background as well as an interview with the artists.
