Interview with the artists
(english text version below) Das Radioteleskop von Dwingeloo befindet sich auf dem Gelände des Instituts ASTRON und ist seit 2009 offiziell als Industriedenkmal anerkannt. Für Solar Sound Ensemble bildete es am 2. Juli 2011 Bühne und Projektionsfläche zugleich: Kurz nach Einsatz des Sonnenuntergangs beginnt das Konzert; mit Einbruch der Dunkelheit kommt dann eine Videoprojektion auf das feine Gitternetz der Teleskopschüssel hinzu. Innerhalb des zeitlich klar strukturierten, in weiten Teilen jedoch improvisierten Stückes führt die Stimme der amerikanischen Künstlerin Julia Scher mit assoziativen Textfragmenten zu Astronomie und ihren Implikationen durch den Abend. Der italienische Klangkünstler Hannes Hoelzl vertont vom Teleskop erfasste Signale, während sich das Spiel des Posaunisten Matthias Muche auf einer Linie zwischen kosmischer Abstraktion und motorenartigem Brummen und Knurren bewegt. Als eine Art terrestrischer Basis fungiert der elektrische Palmwedel. Anfang und Ende der Performance bildet jeweils eine Drehung des Radioteleskops, wobei die Schüssel ganz zuletzt in die nach oben geöffnete Horizontale schwenkt.
Eine Kooperation zwischen Solar Sound Ensemble, OEROL, ASTRON und CAMRAS. In Auftrag gegeben vom Centrum Beeldende Kunste Drenthe. Kommissarische Leitung: Monica Boekholt. Initiert und koordiniert von Monica Boekholt & Andreas Oskar Hirsch. Mit besonderem Dank an Peter Bennema & Paul Boven.
The Dwingeloo radio telescope is to be found within the grounds of the ASTRON Institute and was officially recognised as an industrial heritage monument in 2009. On July 2, 2011, ‚Solar Sound Ensemble‘ transformed the telescope into a stage and projection surface, with the concert starting shortly after sunset. With nightfall, a video projection was added onto the fine-mesh grid of the telescope. During what was a clearly time-structured yet also in many parts improvised piece, the voice of American artist Julia Scher guided us through the evening with an associative narrative on astronomy and its implications. The Italian sound artist Hannes Hoelzl transformed signals recorded by the telescope into music, while the trombone played by Matthias Muche moved between the lines of cosmic abstraction and motor-like rumbles and drones. All the while, the electric palm leaf functioned as a kind of terrestrial base. The radio telescope was turned at the beginning and end of the performance, with the dish finally coming to rest in a horizontal position facing up into the sky.
